How is Project Nexus timely?

The Biden administration has called for rapid modernization of water, transportation and energy infrastructure, and federal agencies have been directed to identify new opportunities for clean-energy technology and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, California is calling for 60 percent of its electricity to come from renewable sources by 2030. Gov. Newsom outlined a historic $15 billion climate bill for California in 2021 to protect the state from climate change and support underserved communities.

California residents and sustainability entrepreneurs are seeing how private companies and other countries are experimenting with putting solar panels over bodies of water, saving land and putting a lid on evaporation. Solar over canals have been deployed successfully in India and continues to expand. The idea is a way to begin reimagining existing water and energy infrastructure in order to meet California’s growing needs, starting in the Central Valley.
